On August 15, 2012, at approximately 1:00 p.m. MDT an incident occurred on the Encana Oil & Gas (USA) Inc. Davis well pad located in Weld County, approximately 5 miles south and 5 miles east of Platteville, CO.
Encana immediately activated its emergency response plan and local responders were notified. The well was immediately shut-in and the location secured.
Tragically, there was one fatality. That individual's name has not yet been released. Three other individuals were injured and transported to Northern Colorado Medical Center in Greeley, CO. All were released yesterday. Names or personal information about these individuals will not be released by Encana.
While we currently believe the incident to be the result of a high pressure gas release, the exact cause is not known at this time. The Davis location is a multi-well pad where three horizontal wells had recently been safely drilled and completed. The work being performed at the time of the incident involved transitioning the wells from the active completions operations phase to the final production phase.
Encana is cooperating with the appropriate authorities in this investigation. Additionally, we are conducting our own internal investigation.
We commend staff and local responders for their quick and thoughtful response to this incident.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of our fallen colleague and anyone impacted by this tragedy.
