In an innovative reclamation project, Encana is successfully converting an abandoned well site into a sustainable wetland to establish a suitable grizzly bear habitat.

Back

In October of 2011, in an innovative reclamation project, we successfully transplanted native plants on an abandoned well site. The project, located 60 kilometres (37 miles) north of Nordegg, Alberta, involved converting a former lease site into a sustainable wetland. The focus of the initiative was to establish a suitable grizzly bear habitat.

Wetlands like these provide habitat for a diverse range of species; grizzly bears, moose, elk, black bears, waterfowl and song birds have all been spotted in the area nearby. The use of indigenous plant species and the potential benefits to wildlife in the vicinity received endorsement and approval from Alberta Sustainable Resource Development as an acceptable land use conversion. The project plan also included engaging local Aboriginal workers to assist with the field work. These workers even camped nearby during the replanting efforts and will watch for tracks and monitor wildlife habitat use.

Although we can’t use this innovative approach in every case, this particular project provided a positive alternative with lasting implications for the biodiversity of the area. Field work will continue from 2011 through to 2013 to monitor vegetation and compare data with other locations in the area before applying for a reclamation certificate.
