Cutbank Ridge

Natural gas, northeast British Columbia, acquired in 2003

EnCana captured the Cutbank Ridge resource play in 2003 with the largest single-day land purchase ever made in B.C.—325,000 net acres. We now hold about 962,000 net acres on the play.

Cutbank Ridge targets primarily the Cadomin geological formation using horizontal drilling and open-hole stimulation techniques which, in combination, have generated attractive results. As the Cadomin formation runs west into B.C., it thickens at times to up to 300 feet of gas-charged rock. Accessible year-round, Cutbank Ridge contains several prospective zones above and below the Cadomin that can be precisely identified and drilled using 3-D seismic.

Several pipelines and gas processing plants serve the area, enabling gas from new wells to reach markets quickly. Through its Oil and Gas Development Strategy, the Government of British Columbia established targeted royalties, fiscal reforms, infrastructure incentives and regulatory streamlining. This created a vibrant and competitive environment that has helped EnCana expand its potential in northeast B.C.

Natural gas production averaged 258 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) in 2007.
