Pelican Lake

Heavy oil, northeast Alberta, acquired in 1997

With about one billion barrels of water floodable heavy oil in place, the Pelican Lake development started with primary production which is capable of recovering about six percent of the oil in place.

Since 2006 we converted 26 wells to polymer injection and 36 wells to water injection, increasing production by 5 percent. In 2006, we reached an oilsands royalty program payout, triggering a royalty increase from one percent of gross revenue to 25 percent of net revenue.

EnCana's application of waterflood techniques is expected to increase recovery from this resource play to about 12 percent.

Oil production averaged 23,253 bbls/d in 2007.
