Wetlands big winner in new collaboration

EnCana commits $1 million to conserve and restore wetlands in Alberta and B.C.

Calgary, AB – Wetland conservation received a $1 million boost from EnCana Corporation through a new collaboration with Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) to conserve and restore key wetlands in Alberta and northeast British Columbia. The five-year collaboration pairs DUC's wetland conservation work and EnCana's sustainable development initiatives in the company's operating areas. Projects underway include restoration and conservation work at Pine Lake and Buffalo Lake in Alberta, mapping of wetlands in the western boreal forest region near Fort Nelson and restoration and reclamation work at two sites in the Peace River region of northeast B.C. Consultation is also underway to determine a suitable project in the Alberta Foothills region east of Jasper National Park.

"This will go a long way in helping us work towards achieving our wetlands conservation goals, which contribute towards the overall health of the land and provide benefits to waterfowl, wildlife and all Canadians," said C. Neil Downey, DUC President. "Ducks Unlimited Canada welcomes the collaboration with EnCana and all organizations working to keep our natural landscapes intact. This recognizes the important role that wetlands play in the lives of all Canadians."

"EnCana has worked with Ducks Unlimited Canada for many years, and it is a natural fit for us to further partner with DUC in a number of key areas where we operate," said Mike Forgo, Vice President of Business Services for EnCana's Canadian Foothills Division. "Wetland conservation is important to the environment. These projects will help restore wetlands in areas of Alberta and B.C. where we work and live. That is why EnCana wanted to make such a significant contribution to this project."

Wetlands act as natural water filters, reduce the effects of floods and droughts, offer recreational opportunities and provide homes for waterfowl and other wildlife. DUC's work involves finding unique ways of engaging landowners, industry, government and the public to work together to conserve wetlands.

EnCana's contribution is part of the Wetlands for Tomorrow campaign, a North American-wide campaign in which DUC is committed to raising $500 million by 2011 for wetlands conservation.

Ducks Unlimited Canada is a national, private, non-profit organization which has been committed to wetland conservation for 70 years.

EnCana Corporation is a leading North American unconventional natural gas and integrated oil company. By partnering with employees, community organizations and other businesses, EnCana contributes to the strength and sustainability of the communities where it operates.
