EnCana donates $500,000 to Medicine Hat College

Medicine Hat – December 8, 2004

Medicine Hat College's "Powering the Future" campaign is off to a great start. The $3.8 million campaign to upgrade and relocate the power engineering technology lab has now received confirmation of a $500,000 contribution from EnCana Corporation, one of the world's leading independent oil and gas companies that has a long history of exploration and development activity in southeast Alberta.

"One of EnCana's current funding priorities is in addressing the shortage of skilled labour facing the oil and gas industry," said Mary Ann Steen, Manager, Community Investment for EnCana. "We are very pleased to support Medicine Hat College's "Powering the Future" campaign as part of our efforts to increase the number of trained power engineers across Canada."

An increased demand for power engineers in the workforce has prompted companies like EnCana to invest financial resources to help build a new facility for the program to ensure that students will be proficiently trained with state-of-the-art technology, while demonstrating commitment to people and communities.

The Power Engineering Program at Medicine Hat College is one of only three Power Engineering Diploma Programs offered in Alberta. Currently, this facility is located off campus in a building that is leased from the City of Medicine Hat. Though this agreement has been favourable, the desire for an on-campus facility, coupled with the need for updated equipment, is the driving force behind this campaign.

As a result of their tremendous support, EnCana will have the opportunity to name the new Power Engineering facility.

"We are very excited with EnCana's generous contribution. Their sizeable donation brings us closer to our goal and gives the campaign a great deal of momentum," said Dr. Ralph Weeks, President of Medicine Hat College. "We truly appreciate their support of this significant project."
